Cape Sounion, within a distance of 68km from Athens, is a popular daytrip. The Aegean Sea viewed from the ruins of the ancient temple of Poseidon, god of the sea, is a unique experience. The temple was built in 450 B.C. The site was sacred for ancient Greeks, sailors in particular, who used to pray and make sacrifices in the name of Poseidon, in order to keep them safe in their travels.

MYTHOLOGY

According tothe legend, Aegeus, king of Athens, was waiting for his son, Thiseas, to return from Creta. When he saw his son’s ship travelling in black sails assumed Thiseas was dead and fell off the cliff of Sounio. The sea underneath was named Aegean Sea in his honor.
